Five Issues In Joseph Michael Linsner Talks Dawn / Vampirella
Writer Joseph Michael Linsner discusses Dynamite's series Dawn/Vampirella #5 with Byron Brewer.
BYRON BREWER: Joe, your team-up of two classic femme fatales comes to a conclusion this week with issue #5. What was the most challenging thing in bringing these two great franchises, Vampirella and your own creation Dawn, together?
JOSEPH MICHAEL LINSNER: Working with these two ladies was a very rewarding challenge. In a way, they did fight for screen time, because they have two very different approaches. Dawn is more contemplative, and Vampi is more action-oriented. I wanted the story to have a balance between the two and be a "thinking man's spectacle". My favorite action movies always have a substantial subtext, so I that's what I was aiming for.
BB: Now that issue #5 is here, did you as a creator tell the story you wanted to tell?
JML: Yes. Dynamite was wonderful in their support of my vision. This works not only as a crossover, but as an addition to the Dawn saga as well. All too often crossovers take place in a bubble, apart from the main characters' "true" storylines. But not this time.
BB: For readers who have yet to pick up this week's issue, can you hint at any surprises we may have coming?
JML: With any luck, the story will come together in a surprising but logical way. Dawn has a dark side that we don't always get to see — she spends most of her time trying to save souls. But sometimes that dark edge has to show itself — those horns have to come out. That's all I'll say for now.
BB: We know you know the voice of Dawn inside out. Was it difficult getting your hands around the complex Vampirella's character?
JML: Vampirella has had many creative parents, many different voices bringing her to life. I just let Vampi come forth as I saw her, based on all of the great Vampi comics I've read over the years. Hopefully her fans will deem my version worthy. I have nothing but the highest respect for the character, and love her dearly. Bringing her to life — next to my baby, Dawn — has been an honor and a thrill.
BB: Are there any other femme fatales in the Dynamite stable you would like to see Dawn teamed with?
JML: Maybe a certain "She-Devil with a Sword". Could the world handle two flaming redheads? That would be a true clash of the titans. But before anything like that can happen, Dawn has to tend to her own garden with some pure Dawn comics. That'll be the next creator-owned work I do.
