Happy New Year? It Will Be Until You Read the Next Issue of Batman
In recent months, reading the twice-monthly Batman comic book (plus annual) has been like watching the San Junipero episode of Black Mirror. Or the new Hang The DJ. Compared to the normal way of things, it is light, it is lovely, it is life-affirming. We have had proposals and acceptances, we have had life histories full of love and trips to the funfair, full of life. Much at odds with a standard Batman tone, yet still most definitely Batman comics. And very enjoyable ones too.
Well, that was 2017, this is 2018, and things are about to get a lot darker. Forget your San Junipero, the first Batman comic book of 2018, Batman #38 is more Shut Up And Dance. With a smattering of Crocodile.
It's called The Origin Of Bruce Wayne. And it's only as much an Origin of the Bruce Wayne that you know and love, as The Killing Joke is. We wrote about what was coming here, in those terms…
Basically, the family who go into a comic shop on the first weekend of 2018, with their youngest asking for a Batman comic book, they pick this up and let little Timmy read it in the back seat while they go to the park…
…well, they're not coming back the same.
BATMAN #38
(W) Tom King (A) Travis Moore (CA) Tim Sale
"THE ORIGIN OF BRUCE WAYNE"! If Mattie could grow up to be anybody, he'd grow up millionaire playboy Bruce Wayne. But what would happen if he was forced to relive the worst tragedy of Bruce's life and his parents were murdered? Batman's hunt for the killer puts him face to face with a strange mirror version of his own past.
