Injured Cartoonist Riss To Take Over Editorship Of Charlie Hebdo

The French cartoonist Riss, real name Laurent Sourisseau, injured in the attack against Charlie Hebdo almost two weeks ago, will succeed the late cartoonist Charb as editor on the satirical cartoon magazone.

20 Minutes quotes current acting editor Gérard Biard as saying "There were two bosses Charlie Hebdo: Charb and Riss. Charb is no longer there, but Riss should leave the hospital on Monday."

He has been managing editor of the paper since 2009.

But before we see a new issue, the team are taking two weeks off. The next issue is expected on 4th February, though the current version will remain on sale. Riss drew this cartoon for that issue with his left hand.

In other news, the Spirou Special published as a homage to Charlie Hebdo will be reprinted, with 100,000 copies to be added to the previous 77,000 print run.

There have also been large anti-Charlie Hebdo and anti-French protests and rallies in Pakistan, Iran, Niger, Algeria and Chechnya, even as community leaders have called for calm. The Iranian government has closed one newspaper for showing solidarity with the magazine.
