Kickstarters From The Heart Of The UK: Brethern Born No. 2 And Aberrant No.1

By Olly MacNamee

Two Kickstarter campaigns for ya today, both from UK creators and both with very different projects for your consideration.

BB1 (1)

First, we have the campaign for Brethern Born No. 2, which after just the first 12 days succeeded in achieving their goal of £1,500 and is now aiming to achieve a certain number of stretch goals in what remains of the campaign (just over two weeks at time of writing). Goals which would include further art prints up for grabs and the introduction of fridge magnets, which appeals to me. After all, who doesn't like a good fridge magnet, right? My fridge is covered in 'em.

That is not to say that all of the more meatier pledge prizes have been grabbed, but they are going quickly. You'll have to look for yourself, but checking now there are only 2 of 10 £75 pledges left that include signed copies of this second issue as well as a variant cover edition and original artwork too.

Here's what Jon Laight and Phil Knibbs, the writer and artist of the series respectfully has to say about issue 2:

Brethren Born is a sci fi superhero adventure following the mysterious Newton and his brutal mission of vengeance. Issue #1 was set over three action packed timelines and has set the scene for Issue #2 where we are introduced to characters such as Mr Fresco (he likes the outdoors), Crime-lord Chang (evil in a lab coat) and Officer Trenton (good cop/bad cop??) in an opening scene of dastardly doings and deeds.

Newton also gets to show us some of his awesomely jaw dropping abilities for the first time…just a taster of the things to come. You also get to see a lot more of the 1963 timeline, giving a little more of the origin story as a much younger Dr. Bradshaw tries to take control of a world changing event, hampered by a familiar figure from issue#1.

If that has whet your appetite, then maybe this superhero title is for you. This campaign closes on March 6th for anyone interested.

abberant 2

Whereas, if you're more a fan of the horrific, but humourous, then the new Kickstarter for Aberrant No.1 from Geeky Comics' Victor Wright and artist Martyn Rotherham might be more your cup of tea.

Abandoned by their creator, a family of monsters fend for themselves in their steam punk home – Aberrant Zoo and Fair. Left to rot in the darkness for years, Aberrant keeps itself hidden from the outside world. But things take a turn for the bloody and bizarre, when a band of thieves break in and realise that it's not quite as vacant as they would have believed. Shadows that move are accompanied by whispers and screams and in the gardens the dead walk again – watched overhead by a secret observer. The trespassers realise they are not alone, but is it enough to put them off from finding the treasures they seek? And will they discover the secret of the clock, high on the gate tower, which keeps on ticking even though no one tends to its needs.

Like any good Kickstarter, the more you pledge the more you gain in return. A range of T-shirts, mugs and original artwork are available depending on your price range as well as the chance to be depicted in the comic as a zombie if you're rich enough to go all out on a £250 pledge.

Either way, it's free to look at both of these very different comic book titles, especially if the accompanying artwork to this feature has interested you.

Who knows, you could be backing the future comic book stars of the future. After all, us Brits have certainly left our mark on the US comic scene, and continue to do so with many creators having started off as indie producers themselves.
