Once upon a time, in a place called the nineties and the early noughties, Marvel and DC Comicxs crossovers were pretty common. Batman/Punisher, Silver Surfer/Superman, Batman/Daredevil, Darkseid Vs Galactus, Green Lantern/Silver Surfer, Batman/Captain America… and then we had the Marvel Vs DC crossover event.

Marvel And DC Comics To Republish Their Crossovers, Including Amalgam

Amalgam Comics was one of the final Marvel/DC Comics crossovers, in which comic book characters from each universe and publisher were smooshed together to create new ones. They first appeared in a series of twelve one-shots that sat between issues 3 and 4 of the 12-issue series DC Comics Vs Marvel Comics series from 1996. Presented as if the Amalgam Comics publisher had existed for decades, with stories and editorial comments referring to a fictional history stretching back to the Golden Age, including the eighties fictional series Secret Crisis of the Infinity Hour.

A second series of twelve one-shots was published in 1997, six of the issues each year were published by DC and six by Marvel. Each was followed by the Access mini-series, the first by DC, the second by Marvel, which featured new Amalgam characters. And then.. that was that. It was followed by a JLA/Avengers crossover a few years later but in the last twenty years, DC Comics and Marvel Comics no longer crossed over. The editorial sides fell out badly courtesy of Joe Quesada and Bill Jemas' antics, and Paul Levitz and Bob Wayne's reticence. And then Disney bought Marvel with the rivalry between Disney and Warner Bros brought to the fore, and that was that. It took George Perez's impending death to see them to republish the Avengers Vs Justice League crossover with a short run a couple of years ago.

The 24 Amalgam one-shots have been reprinted in four trade paperbacks, two from each publisher, but they have been long out of print. But now it seems that the reprints at least are returning in a new form.

In his private Facebook art collector group, artist Barry Kitson who had worked on a couple of these crossovers, posted "Marvel and DC are collaborating on reprinting many of the Amalgam titles including Magneto and the Magnetic Men, and the crossover events including the Batman/Punisher books. To this end they have asked for any extras they can include in the new versions – I don't have too many originals left, but if any one on the group have any of the pages and are willing to share scans please do let me know. In the mean time one of the things I did uncover are these unused cover thumbnails for Batman/ Punisher – hope you enjoy seeing them here first! :-)" It didn't stay private for long.
