The Purple Man Is Marvel's Third Most Wanted Terrorist – Official

Brian Bendis may be leaving Marvel Comics for DC very soon, but he is leaving some presents behind. He created the character Jessica Jones with Michael Gaydos for his series Alias, and recently revived her in the Jessica Jones series, in the light of the very successful Netflix series – which may be the only example of a hit solo superhero character created in the 21st century.

In that series he also reinterpreted the classic Stan Lee/Wally Wood Marvel supervillain The Purple Man as a major threat by looking at the realities of his power set, mentally controlling others, and the kind of effect that would have on himself and those he encountered at a psychological level, something that the TV series dug into in spades. And while that show killed off the Purple Man, played so convincingly by David Tennant, the character was still alive in the Marvel Universe.

Recently, in the wake of the Secret Empire crossover that Brian Bendis refused to participate in, SHIELD was closed down. Brian has taken and used that plotpoint in a number of his titles, including Jessica Jones, as it meant that the Purple Man was free.

The previous issue of Jessica Jones, had one of the most chilling crossovers as the Purple Man took control of Jessica and Luke Cage's daughter, Jessica's worse fear. So in this issue of Jessica Jones #14 by Bendis, Gaydos and Matt Hollingsworth out today,  she has to take extreme measures. And in the process, see the Alpha Flight space station, destroyed in Secret Empire, rebuilt. Has anyone told the characters in their own comic books?

The Purple Man, once dismissed as a silly Silver Age Marvel comics character is now the third most wanted terrorist in the Marvel Earth, behind Magneto and Doctor Doom. But with Magneto playing nice, and Doctor Doom doing the same courtesy of Bendis, could that mean that he'll rise to the top spot they next time they run the statistics?
