A Whole Lotta Shadowland
As Marvel's Shadowland series and spinoff titles starts to kick off, with Daredevil seemingly being reinvented as a supervillain, pitted against Luke Cage, Elektra, Spider-Man, Iron Fist, Wolverine, Moon Knight and more. And Marvel are making sure there will be plenty of copies on retailer shelves.
If retailer order more copies of Shadowland #1 than they did X-Men: Second Coming #1 , they can then order another two times as many copies for free. So if they ordered a hundred of X-Men Second Coming, they can order three hundred of Shadowland #1 but only pay for one hundred and one copies. Most retailers order at around 50-55% discount of cover price, this will give retailers 80-85% discount if they take full advantage.
Of course this may give them more copies than they can sell. But if the Marvel hype machine lives up to what it expects, it means that if there's increased demand from the buying public, retailers will be able to meet it.
However, it's also quite likely that in a few months time, copies will be in the dollar bins – as retailers will still make a profit on them.
Nevertheless, this is a very strong promotion on Marvel's part to support what might otherwise be seen as a "side-event". They have a great deal of confidence in fan reaction to the book, to choose this kind of promotion.
Basically, the odds are that it's going to be rather good. Just not one for Speculators' Corner.
