Brick Batsignals Cure The Post-Con Blues
By Brian Goldberg
I was one of the many guests at New York Comic Con who was experiencing some post event blues. My budget was blown and I missed the excitement. I'm already looking forward to the 2015 show where I can spend some time with my fellow geek bretheren.
While doing my normal Facebook Friday afternoon "tuning into the online toy collector community" scrolling I came across a post that gave me that con spark. On Saturday 10/18/14 from 12 to 2 PM Toys "R" Us stores and Lego were throwing a special event for fans of the toyline all over the country.
Come build a LEGO Batman™ Bat-Signal at Toys "R" Us!
In-Store LEGO Event: Event intended for children ages 5-up. Parental supervision required at all times. All giveaways and event materials available while supplies last and distributed to participating children only. Limit 1 per child. Quantities limited; no rain checks. All participating Toys "R" Us US locations.
I knew I would be visiting my boyfriend on that day, so I immediately called him and said something to the extent of "OMG! I love the Bat Signal! We have to go!" I called the Toys "R" Us in Valley Stream, NY to make sure they were participating in the event. I asked the kind lady at the customer service desk, "Is there an age restriction for the event?" She replied, "You have to be at least five years old." I clarified and said "can the big kids build a bat signal too?" There was a laugh and a "yes."
We arrived at the store at 12:05 and made a b line for the event. There was a table set up with instruction sheets and tiny bins filled with even tinier parts. The woman facilitating the event was very friendly and helped us build our Bat Signals. 19 bricks were combined to create an underrated component of Batman's arsenal. Once my new toy was completed I felt a sense of accomplishment and joy. Once we finished our Signals, a slew of kids of all ages joined the event and began building. It wasn't quite NYCC, but it did the trick.
