Dave Sim On Mark Millar

Dave Sim On Mark MillarDave Sim, creator of Cerebus, is running a series of interviews with a number of websites – including Bleeding Cool – answering questions asked by the sites' readers.

The first was from Millarworld, where Mike Kitchen asked him if he's consider working with Mark Millar on a creator-owned project. Sim seemed to decline even the possibility, due to his own lack of market attractiveness, but then talked about Millar's aptitude in dealing with the multimedia world, and his own reluctance.

He's very adroit, as you indicate, and he keeps everything on the situation board in front of him. He doesn't neglect or undervalue anything.  He shifts his balance so he's leaning one direction or the other but he's like a professional skier that way.  He gets blocked in Hollywood, he goes back to Marvel, he gets blocked at Marvel, he does something in the Indy end of things.  Hey look, a narrow window opens up in Hollywood — zoom, he's through it before they even know they left him an opening.

Me, on the other hand, I got a phone message from Paramount Pictures a couple of weeks back.  Can I call and let them know if the rights to Cerebus are available?  I just automatically delete it.  It's just a functionary.  The Kickstarter thing showed up on someone's radar screen and it was worth a post-it note for someone in the mailroom.  Call this guy and find out how much he wants for his soul.  Don't go a penny over $75,000.  That kind of thing.  It's not going to be talking about a HIGH SOCIETY movie.  I'm not going to get final cut.  "No one's heard of you, no one's heard of your character, here's a wad of F.O. and go away money.  You in or out?"

Which, to be fair, is pretty much what happened with Mark Millar and Wanted. But Millar had more than Wanted to offer. Dave Sim, as he has often repeated, and observed when he decided to quit Glamourpuss, only has Cerebus
