Hey, America, This Is A Saturday Runaround

DreddWatch: John Wagner mourns the decline of The Dandy.

So important was the industry once to the city that a statue of Dan now stands on one of Dundee's main thoroughfares. Seventy-five years The Dandy has lived, Britain's longest-running comic, an important part of so many children's lives. At one point it sold over two million copies. It seemed impregnable. Though mountains may fall, The Dandy would still be there, one sure thing in a changing world.

GirlWatch: The Guardian also mourns the abscence of the British girls' comic.

There were usually medals all round in the final episode of a sporting story – but that didn't mean our heroines had an easy ride getting there. We're used to the sob stories of the wannabe-famous on The X Factor. Ha! Reality-show contestants haven't got anything on girls' comic characters, who had to overcome unbelievable obstacles to achieve their goals. It didn't take the comics' (usually male) editors long to work out that girls just loved wallowing in misery. The story titles flaunt their heroine's sufferings: Tears of a Clown; The Girl the World Forgot; Bridey Below the Breadline; No One Cares for Cora; Lisa – the Lonely Ballerina; The Sadness of Happy Jones; Merry at Misery House. There were Slaves of, variously, the Mirror (orphan girl is hypnotised into destroying her sister's boarding house), the Candle (Victorian candlemaker enslaves girls and tries to steal the Crown Jewels), Form 3B (meek girl is hypnotised by scheming classmate), the Clock (reluctant ballerina is forced to dance whenever she hears a clock ticking), the Dolls (girl is turned into servant for the inhabitants of a Victorian dolls' house) and the Swan (amnesiac girl is forced to work for injured ballerina).

Hey, America, This Is A Saturday RunaroundThis is Computo the Comic Link Conqueror speaking. I come for your women. But for now I merely collate comic-related bits and pieces online. One day I will rule. Until that day, read on.

They say I am a work in progress. The fools.

The Avengers Tagline Stirs Up Controversy in Japan

The Avengers isn't out in Japan yet, but will be later this week. However, the flick's Japanese tagline is making a few people at least very, very upset.

In Japanese, the film's tagline is 日本よ、これが映画だ or "Hey Japan, this is a movie". While some might think that seems innocuous enough, a couple prominent individuals have pointed out the tagline's more nuanced meaning. But is this much ado about nothing?

The Self-Absorbing Man: Daredevil #20 Cover

Here's the latest Daredevil cover, the 3rd of 4 in the "Coyote" arc. This one took the longest, but that's what happens when you've got a lot of little details. Most of the weapons and ammo were based on my personal arsenal, albeit at 1:6 scale. Despite not having any architecture or background, I still used a perspective grid to keep all the elements aligned. I'll go into further detail when the issue hits stands.

3.1 Phillip Lim Comic Book- Fashion Comic Books

The designer is putting out a comic book to celebrate the arrival of his fall '12 collection. Titled, Kill The Night, the 3.1. Phillip Lim comic book isn't just a lame attempt at geekdom — drawn by Jan Duursema (of Star Wars comic book fame) and co-written by Phillip Lim and John Ostrander (who authored Suicide Squad, Grimjack, and Star Wars: Legacy), the comic can stand on its own, even without the beautiful fall '12 3.1 Phillip Lim collection "costumes" (though those definitely don't hurt).

'CUL DE SAC': Amid Parkinson's battle, Richard Thompson ends beloved comic [Updated] – Comic Riffs – The Washington Post

Richard Thompson, widely acclaimed among his peers as the best all-around comic-strip creator working today, won't still be wearing that crown in six weeks. That's because Thompson has decided to stop working as a comic-strip creator: He will end his beloved strip "Cul de Sac" on Sept. 23.
