Well, it's kinda "duh" news, but now it's officially official so here we go. Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana will reprise their roles for all three Avatar sequels, 20th Century Fox announced today. Production begins on the back to back to back films later this year.
Worthington played the human soldier Jake Sully, who donned an Avatar of a Na'vi and ultimately fell for Saldana's Neytiri, turning his back on his species to help her defend her planet. James Cameron said in a statement:
"Jake Sully is rare combination of passion, strength, street smarts and soul, which requires a lot from an actor. Sam brought to the role a combination of sensitivity, vulnerability and strength. Zoë captured every aspect of the character I envisioned, bringing to Neytiri a mix of delicacy, fierceness and incredible physicality. I am beyond pleased they¹ll be returning with us to Pandora."
Cameron also previously said that the sequels will be a family saga in the vein of The Godfather, with a fair amount taking place underwater.
Avatar 2 will be released in December 2016, the third in December 2017, then finally concluding (for now) December 2018.
