Plunder #1- A Somali Pirate Story With Gruesome Intensity

When I heard about Plunder about a month ago, I was excited to get my hands on a comic described as "a visceral horror story." However, I was not expecting to be as terrified as I was while reading it. From Archaia, Plunder #1, written by, Swifty Lang with art by Skuds McKinley will set your heart racing, and is a gruesome story sure to send chills down your spine. The story follows a gang of Somali pirates who find themselves trapped in the middle of a massacre, after they face off with an illegal Chinese vessel. Their only hope is the 14-year-old boy, aboard the ship, who can translate for them. He also narrates the story.

I found the first half of the comic to be chaotic. At first it focuses in on the 14-year-old boy's narration. He's surrounded by a group of crazy pirates, and is clearly struggling with how to behave like them. From there, we are introduced to the characters in a very sporadic kind of way, which made it a little hard to digest. Once the plot begins to flow, the reading experience improves. As I mentioned above, I was terrified while I read this issue. To be clear, it was mostly because of the amount of graphic images thrown my way. To me, Lang's script didn't resonate any sense of mystery or suspense. While it is very well-written, I think his goal was to unload a lot of information to set up his plans for future issues. I wish it was done in a more subtle way, but you do get some amusing interactions between the crewmembers. Overall, it's McKinley's grotesque illustrations that make your stomach churn and your brain fear what's coming next.

The issue ends on a point that will leave readers wanting more, but time will tell if I'm one of them. I have high hopes of what the series will be, and will look forward to reading next month's issue to further form my opinion of this interesting book. If you're a fan of terrifying graphic comics, you should definitely pick Plunder #1 up.
