Stupid Speculation Corner: Folklords #1 Already $8 and Rising With Two Weeks to FOC

Okay, so this is ridiculous. Final Order Cut-Off is, as Bleeding Cool readers know, the moment when retailers can increase numbers on a comic book and a) be pretty much guaranteed to get them and b) not be penalised by Diamond with reorder fees.

We warned you that Boom Studios new series Folklords, debuting in November from Matt Kindt, Matt Smith and probably some other Matts, had all the signs of being another creator-owned blockbuster hit for the company. It's seemingly tailored to fans of Harry Potter, but instead inverts the paradigm – this time our hero is from the land of the fantastic and magical but dreams of coming to our seemingly mundane world. That clash of fantasy and reality reminds us of the formula behind Image Comics' hit series Middlewest from Skottie Young and Jorge Corona, which has racked up big eBay sales, a hefty 2nd print, and awards excitement.

At NYCC last week, as Boom Studios were liar-liars-pants-on-fire who announced a seventh printing for Once & Future #1, we warned you again that this excitement might drive Folklords #1 into another hit with collectors.

Even some lucky retailers who scored an advance PDF are excited.

Well, we're not the only ones thinking that as Folklords #1 main cover by Matt Smith is already listed for $8 – a %100 increase on the cover price and we're still 2 weeks away from FOC.

Which is ridiculous. Retailers can still order copies for their retailer discount of the cover price of $3.99. And readers can ask retailers to up their order now as well.

The set of the Smith and Fegredo covers is up for $15 – which at double the standard cover price. Which, as we said, is still the available price everywhere for this comic.

Retailers already were caught short on copies of Once & Future #1 and Something is Killing The Children #1, something Boom President Filip Sablik already apologized for, before having to rush new printings of subsequent issues and once again allocate copies (albeit less severely than before).

With this early collector and speculator interest in Folklords #1, this two times cover price multiple 2 weeks out from FOC makes it seem like Boom is on track for another hit creator-owned series this year in their Marvel vs DC war of creator-owned comics with Image – who themselves have a November shipping juggernaut in Snyder & Soule's Undiscovered Country.

The only (multi-part) question is – will retailers have enough copies of Folklords #1 on hand or are we headed for another Once & Future situation, spurring multiple printings followed by Boom!'s Filip Sablik on an apology tour and then lying as they print more?

Folkords #1 is on-sale in comic shops November 13th. It goes to FOC on October 21st.
