"Star Wars Resistance" Season 2 Premier – The Colossus Heads "Into The Unknown" [PREVIEW]
In the Star Wars universe, the Resistance is running on borrowed time. Heading into the final film, Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise Of Skywalker, the New Republic government has been destroyed and General Leia's (Carrie Fisher) Resistance has taken heavy losses. The Disney Channel Lucasfilm Animation series Star Wars Resistance depicts a small group of average citizens living through the same epic events. Like Leia's Resistance, Star Wars Resistance is also living on borrowed time. Disney has already announced that the second season of Resistance will be the last. The fate of the series is decided, but the future of the galaxy, the Resistance organization, and the ragtag group of Resistance characters is less clear. Fans will have to wait and see as large galactic events and smaller practical realities take their toll.
At the end of Season 1, Star Wars Resistance had the denizens of the Colossus blast out of the water and into hyperspace. Flying through space at the speed of light in a giant bucket of bolts, Kaz (Christopher Sean), Yeager (Scott Lawrence), and their team are running from the First Order. And, due to Neeku (Josh Brener) being Neeku, they have no idea where the Colossus is headed. Kaz may have been the galaxy's worst spy, but he has always been a gifted pilot. Now that the Colossus is in space, Kaz and Yeager can confront the First Order on more equal terms. But the Colossus is still an old station with limited supplies. In the end, the difference between winning and losing may come down to the practical rather than the military.
The best part about Resistance has been its focus of the practicalities of war for the average citizen. Far from the halls of power or the key battles, war often comes down to the practical. People struggle to survive, to keep their heads down, and to make it through the war. Rather than grand strategy, or the movements of armies, real people are worried about food, fuel, and a safe place to call home. Despite an uneven first season, Resistance has been masterful at telling the smaller, more realistic, war stories.
The most pressing issues facing the Colossus in the Season 2 premier "Into The Unknown" are practical. In the preview scene below, as well as the images released by the Disney Channel – seen throughout this article – the Colossus in in rough shape. Without time to prepare for their cross-galaxy voyage, the ship is out of fuel, food, and everything else. While the Aces do their best to protect the Colossus from the First Order, Captain Doza (Jason Hightower) must find a way to keep the ship, and its people, supplied. It looks like the ship is headed in the right direction, towards a know Resistance base. But will the ship, and its citizens, last that long?
Meanwhile, across the galaxy, Tam (Suzie McGrath) comes to terms with her decision to join the First Order. Last season she chose law and order over freedom and ideals. She chose feeling part of something over a team that had lied to her. Now, the First Order wants the Colossus, and Tam is the key to getting it. But how much does she trust her new team? Will she realize the dangers of remaining in contact with her old friends? Will she fly against the Aces? What part will she play in the battles to come? Her – rather underdeveloped – character is still a mystery. Does the audience know her well enough to root for her redemption?
Writers and show runners have one season to wrap up the Resistance storyline and merge it with the larger Star Wars universe. While the show started with cameos by Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) and General Leia (Carolyn Hennesy), the Colossus is now on its own. The Rise of Skywalker is coming, however, and galaxy shaking events are sure to follow. What viewers don't know, and likely won't know for months, is the role Resistance will play in the larger Resistance. Will Yeager and his team influence events, or be influenced by them?
Kaz has already seen his home world destroyed. Yeager has lost his family. Tam has left her whole life behind. Those aboard the Colossus stand by, helpless, as their world shrinks to the size of one rickety old space ship. Lucasfilm Animation has always been honest about the horrors of war, there is no reason to believe they will go easy on the denizens of the Colossus. Season 2 of Star Wars Resistance looks to be quite a ride, but that ride likely leads directly into the events of Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise Of Skywalker. Resistance may not be futile, but it definitely has an expiration date.
Season 2 of Star Wars Resistance premiers with "Into the Unknown" on Sunday October 6 at 10PM on The Disney Channel.
