Star Wars Director Rian Johnson Clarifies Who The Last Jedi Is

It's never fun when the answer to a major question in a movie was right in front of us the entire time. There were a lot of questions that came out of Star Wars: The Force Awakens and even more when the title for the next movie, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, came out. The fans were asking who that was, was Jedi plural, because the plural for Jedi is Jedi, what is going on?

Director Rian Johnson recently did an interview with The New York Times where he revealed that we already know who the last Jedi is — because The Force Awakens told us.

"It's in the opening crawl of The Force Awakens. Luke Skywalker, right now, is the last Jedi. There's always wiggle room in these movies — everything is from a certain point of view — but coming into our story, he is the actual last of the Jedi. And he's removed himself and is alone on this island, for reasons unknown."

For now Luke is the "last Jedi", but that could change. Or maybe it won't, and Rey will be called something completely different. They never explicitly call Kylo Ren a Sith.

In the trailer, Luke says that "it's time for the Jedi to end," which is a statement that left fans on the edge of their seats. Johnson also clarified that it was indeed Luke who said that:

"That's him. It sounds pretty dire. That's something that we're definitely going to dig into. The heart of the movie is Luke and Rey. It follows all the other characters, but its real essence is the development of the two of them. And it's absolutely tied up in that question of, What is Luke's attitude toward the Jedi?"

As the movies have continued to evolve so has the mythology of the world. While The Last Jedi is sure to answers some questions, it's nice to see Johnson answering them instead of letting rumors run rampant.

Summary: Having taken her first steps into a larger world in Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015), Rey continues her epic journey with Finn, Poe and Luke Skywalker in the next chapter of the saga.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi, directed by Rian Johnson, stars Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Mark Hamill, Oscar Isaac, Carrie Fisher, and Adam Driver. It will be released on December 15th.
