The Robot Kingdom Steals The Spotlight In Issue #21 Of Saga

By Christine Marie Vinciquarra

Saga21One

If you've read my past reviews of Saga, you'll know that I have always favored Alana and Marko's storyline over any other events that happen in the plot. However, my opinion has definitely shifted after reading Issue #21. Artist, Fiona Staples takes things from bright and colorful to dark and graphic in a very tasteful way. I'm never disappointed with the creative art style that she brings to this comic. However, writer Brian K. Vaughn is taking the plot in a new direction, and I'm not sure how I feel about it. In some aspects, this path is breathing new life into the comic, but it makes me nervous about how things are going to play out for some of these characters.

[*Spoilers for Saga #21 below!]

Saga21Two

Temptation is definitely taking a toll on Alana and Marko's relationship. With new responsibilities comes new opportunities, friendships, influences, etc. I keep thinking that something is going to trigger a big disagreement. Their relationship is incredibly dysfunctional, and I can't help but wonder how long Vaughn is going to drag this out for. He gives us a glimmer of hope for their relationship in this issue, but quickly snatches it away with Hazel's suspenseful narration. I understand that people grow apart, and Alana and Marko have been put through a lot together. However, their scenes in Issue 21 left me confused and a little bored. If Vaughn's goal is to pull focus from the family, and shift our attention towards the Robot Kingdom, he's doing an excellent job.  I never thought I'd be thankful for some Robot Kingdom scenes.

Saga21Three

The plot definitely picks up mid-issue when we find out what's going on with the devious Robot Janitor. If you read Issue #20 last month, you know that things are headed in a very interesting direction. I can't decide if I'm rooting for him or not. While I have sympathy for what happened in his past, I have a lot of concern for what he plans to do. I guess I have no choice but to wait and see what next months issue brings. I do hope that we get an update about what's going on with Gwendolyn, The Will, Sophie, and Lying Cat. They've been absent for far too long, and I miss them.
