Tuesday Runaround – Go West, Old Man!

Tuesday Runaround – Go West, Old Man!BatWatch: Adam West is participating in a semi-biographical comic book series for Bluewater. Entitled The Mis-Adventures of Adam West is appears to be a Planetary-style interdimensional book wioth Adam West meeting fictional versions of himself along the way.

According to West, he won't be writing the series, but instead oversee each chapter of the story and "make changes as I see fit" — which comes as no surprise, given the semi-biographical nature of some potential story elements. He also acknowledged the somewhat tricky nature of referencing his past roles and projects in the series, but indicated that there shouldn't be any confusion when it comes to his dimension-traversing visitation

"He could meet a graphic depiction of the actor who plays the new Batman," said West. "He'll probably meet a lot of people like that, I have a feeling."

IndiaWatch: The current growth of the Indian comics market (population one and a half billion remember…) gets profiled by their financial press.

"Sales per issue went down from five lakhs to almost 50,000-60,000 and we are now again witnessing an upward trend," Raj Comics owner, Manoj Gupta said.

Jerry Grandenetti, RIP – Jim Amash's MySpace Blog |

I just found out today that Jerry Grandenetti [1927-2010] passed away this past February. It's surprising and disappointing to learn this so late after the event, but you learn what you learn when you learn it.  I never interviewed Grandenetti, though I had always intended to.  I was too slow, which I regret.  There are a couple of interviews with the man on the internet in case you want to check them out. Grandenetti started out working on Will Eisner's Spirit section in the 1940s, and he matured as artist rather quickly.  I liked his work on "Secret Files of Dr. Drew," and thought it interesting to see him break away so quickly from the Eisner-style of drawing.  He's best remembered for his long tenure on the DC war books like Star-Spangled War, All-American Men of War, Our Fighting Forces, G.I. Combat, and Our Army at War, where he did some amazing wash-tone covers…

The Perverted Needs of Forty-Five Year Old Men

I don't think I have any problem with people catering to the needs, perverted or not, of forty-five year old men.  In fact, I think some of the problem with comics is the fact that the big companies still cling to the notion that they don't sell sex.  Through the nineties and the early two thousands we saw Wonder Woman's costume creep up her butt cheeks until they were hanging out like Christmas ornaments with a ribbon between them, and why?  Because there was mainstream respectability to be maintained.  Evil Mary Marvel was the Woman of a Thousand Strategic Shadows for while, because DC comics doesn't do porn.  Meanwhile Shield agents at Marvel are wandering around nude and painted blue, because if you have Victoria Hand and Maria Hill and Steve Rogers, you're not going to waste them, but Marvel characters also don't appear in porn.

Two Covers for Mort Weisinger Paperbacks « The Comics Journal

Mort Weisinger, aside from being Superman's editor, led a high-powered career as a freelance writer. He sold hundreds of magazine articles, notably to Parade. He also masterminded a book called 1001 Valuable Things You Can Get Free, a genius project that went thru 11 editions. Weisinger's wife or son did the writing away for currency charts and wall maps, and Weisinger wrote or edited the blurbs that ran before the necessary addresses. The book's angle was lowest common denominator: everybody loves free stuff. Weisinger's other big success in the book world was a novel called The Contest. Again, he aimed low — the premise was basically to get a lot of hot girls in one place

St. Louis' Star Clipper comic book store shoots commercial for AMC's "The Walking Dead"

Yesterday I fulfilled one of my goals of becoming a zombie. Not literally, of course. The gathering of the dead happened at St. Louis' premiere comic book store, Star Clipper, to promote the brand new TV series for AMC's The Walking Dead. For those of you who don't understand the connection, The Walking Dead is based off of the success of the graphic novels of the same name by Robert Kirkman. Between multiple takes of eating fake brains (a cauliflower head dipped in red goo), attacking a store employee, and shuffling around the store acting dead, I snagged some photos to prove how awesome this event really was. You can check out the entire gallery of photos on flickr here, and be sure to tune into AMC on Halloween when the pilot for The Walking Dead airs 8 PM CST/6PM PST. The commercial will air in the St. Louis and metropolitan area during the pilot.

Publishers like Diamond comics and Raj comics have been in the industry for the past three decades and have been catering to a large chunk of audience both in and outside the country.

"There are many Indian fans living abroad. The increasing demand has forced us to make e-comics," Gulshan said.
