Xbox Live And PSN Experience Severe DDoS Attacks; Kim Dotcom Saves Day To Play Destiny
Sometimes hackers can make important stances and enact actual change from behind a keyboard. As we've seen in the last few weeks with the Sony hacks, the ramifications of online meddling can be catastrophic both financially and politically.
The gaming industry was attacked by a group of e-scrooges though as the 'colourfully' named Lizard Squad hit both Xbox Live and PlayStation Network on Christmas and Boxing Day with DDoS attacks rendering both services unusable for long stretches at a time. For a lot of adults and children getting consoles from Santa, this potentially rendered them useless as they were unable to download important updates.
The Lizard Squad have now backed down from the effort and have said they will never attack the services again. That is in part due to to Megaupload creator, Kim DotCom who just wanted to play some Destiny. He offered the Lizard Squad 3,000 premium subscriptions to his new privacy service Mega to stop their attacks. It seems that did the trick.
He tweeted the DM conversation between him and the group here:
You might still find it hard to get onto both though as the services are still spotty with Microsoft and Sony trying to get back on their feet.
Lizard Squad did leave this parting message on Twitter though before going off and getting into a baiting session with hacker group, Anonymous.
These corporations make billions off your existence and still don't even pay their tax. And you're still defending them? Open your eyes.

Perhaps next time they will understand that if they really want to hurt a company, solely punishing their customers isn't the best way to get support and make people sympathetic to your cause. Especially on Christmas.
