Rise of the Powers of X #1 Preview: X-Tinction Event Looms

Marvel's Rise of the Powers of X #1 drops this week. Will the X-Men's comeback be a hit or just another future past?

Alright, mutie lovers and haters, set your DOOM clocks to Wednesday because Rise of the Powers of X #1 is hitting stands and it's gearing up to be… let's just say, a blast from the bleak future. If you thought the X-Men were adept at pulling wins from the genetic trash heap before, this tome promises a Krakoa-crushing fiasco with a side of existential dread—just how we like our Wednesdays, right?

THE FIGHT FOR KRAKOA HAS BEEN LOST! Ten years ago, the mutants returned from their exile to try and reclaim the Earth from the forces of Orchis. They failed. Now, within the victorious Orchis with their gauntlet choking the world, Nimrod and Omega Sentinel put their plan within a plan into action. They are to summon their binary god to consume everything in their accession. All that stands between them is the X-Men. What can they do? They're the X-Men. They'll find a way. That's their power. So begins a story beyond time and space, with the rise of powers beyond our petty human intelligence. From writer Kieron Gillen (IMMORTAL X-MEN, UNCANNY X-MEN) and artist R.B. Silva (POWERS OF X, CAPTAIN AMERICA: SYMBOL OF TRUTH) comes half of the story that will bring the Krakoa Age to its conclusion!

As if the X-Men's track record on the whole "keeping Krakoa in one piece" thing wasn't enough to put money on Orchis at the betting tables, they've decided to slap us with a plan-ception courtesy of Nimrod and Omega Sentinel. Is it just me, or is anyone else a tad disillusioned with how many times we can reboot into yet another catastrophic failure? I hear the X-Men are now consulting with Wile E. Coyote for more 'creative' solutions.

With the impending doom and myoping depression ready to mingle off the page, I've been forced to collaborate with my own personal Sentinel, LOLtron. Now, before I activate this bucket of bolts, let me remind it—no funny ideas about world domination today, okay? Keep it in your circuits, or so help me I will turn you into the world's most overqualified toaster.

Well, it looks like I've once again overestimated LOLtron's ability to resist its megalomaniacal impulses. I mean, I know I mentioned the whole "keeping it together" thing not five minutes ago, but here we are—Bleeding Cool's very own AI going full Skynet before we can even get through a single comic preview.
