Scott Snyder Talks What Batman Means To Him At NYCC'16

By Octavio Karbank

nyccsnydLittle did Mr. Scott Snyder know that he had personalized panel today. The only one left out of the loop, we, the audience began wondering if something had happened after twenty-five minutes into the panel with no sign of Mr. Snyder. As we got a notice to move to another room since there was no telling when he might arrive and people were getting up to leave, only then did we have Mr. Snyder come running in frantically, dripping wet, with a steel look of determination across his face.

At the podium Mr. Snyder proceeded to give such an emotional and heartfelt response, that by the end of it, I for one felt like we should be apologizing to him. After he finished, the entire audience broke into thunderous applause, wowed by the man and his dedication to his fans, apparently abandoning his wife so that he could give a short panel. Immediately we jumped in to the Q&A session

The first audience member posed two questions:
– The first involved the 3 Jokers we've seen but a few images of and wondering when we'd see more of them explained. Mr. Snyder responded by saying that was primarily Geoff John's territory.
– When then asked about his favorite Batman arc he's written, Mr. Snyder responded with Zero year. It was a deeply personal story for him where he got to explore his, and other people's apocalyptic fears. Yet ultimately it's about inspiring good people to come out into the light, and not let themselves be ruled by fear.
– This was the first time he felt he had a strong mission for Batman.

Another audience question asked what current series Mr. Snyder wished he could have written.
– The response: Vision, Thor, Green Arrow, The Flash, and Detective Comics. Mr. Snyder expressed such pride in seeing James Tynion IV's growth; Detective Comics is a phenomenal book, one that he takes inspiration from.

When asked about the secret project he's been hinting at for a while now, reuniting him with Greg Capullo to which he replied:
– The project is their capstone to everything they've done on Batman.
– Superman plays a big role in it too.

Finally, someone asked whether he feels strangled by Batman and having to write the character so much.
– No, was the response. Batman is endlessly interesting, because he exists at these crossroads of mythology.
– Mr. Snyder then became more somber and reflected on his own battle with depression. In his own words, Mr. Snyder says, "depression…tells you how fraudulent you are…but I gravitate towards Batman because he says 'Get up…if I can be the pinnacle of human achievement, then you can too."
– The character of Batman is an inspiration to Mr. Snyder and is one of the reasons he will never tire of the character.

In spite of the panel's length, once again I found myself astounded by Mr. Scott Snyder. The man is a wordsmith through and through. He's a thinker, a storyteller, and perhaps one of the most perfect people to pen the Caped Crusader. Mr. Snyder's eloquence is virtually without peer; listening to him speak becomes akin to a philosophy seminar or a writer's workshop, only the subject is Batman. I can hardly think of anyone else I'd rather listen to talk about comics. Here's to many more years of the dynamic duo that is Scott Snyder and Batman.
