Stalking The Scum Of The Universe With Her Space Slug Sidekick
Sam Eggleston writes for Bleeding Cool:
So you want to break into comics as a writer, hey? Well, there's an easy way to do it and there's the hard way to do it.
The easy way involves sacrificing some poor, innocent animals, learning and reciting an ancient incantation and summoning Old Scratch himself and then signing your name on that dotted line.
Heck, for a shot at the Big Two, there are quite a few writers who would make sure to cross every T and dot every I on that soul-selling contract.
For the rest of us, it's the hard way. Writer Sam Eggleston is trying that route right now. He has a couple of self-published titles — Last Breath and Cazadora — and has worked on a couple of others as a part of a creative team — Mark McKenna's Combat Jacks and Dimitris Moore's in-development Tesla. Eggleston's plan is simple enough: Make enough comics with strong stories, nice flow and quality art and, eventually, someone with publishing power is going to notice. Plus, it's plenty of fun.
His newest project, a comic he co-wrote with his wife, Kim Eggleston, is Dead by Wednesday, which is currently seeking funding through Kickstarter until Jan. 4. Wednesday is being penciled by Jay De Foy, inked by Josh Oakes and colored and lettered by John Hunt. If the project is successful, the team hopes to have the finished product in the hands of backers by July.
Dead by Wednesday follows the adventures of bounty hunter Wednesday Daring as she stalks the scum of the universe with her trust sidekick space slug, Andy. Together they take on the toughest assignments available. The reason is simple: They pay better. Besides, what good is a bounty hunter who doesn't push themselves to be the best every time they go out? But Wednesday's have-gun-will-bounty-hunt attitude sometimes gets her in more trouble that even she knows what to do with. Thankfully, he grizzled old mentor Gunnar is never too far away.
Making comics is fun, but it can be costly, which is why the creative team has chosen to take the Kickstarter approach. Even with hundreds of comic projects on the site on any given day, Eggleston and the Wednesday creative team believes quality books will always stand out.
As a special nod to the always-supportive team at Bleeding Cool, we're going to be doing 15 books at a special, reduced $10 reward level instead of the normal, non-early-bird price of $15 each.
