Tripping On Fadeaway In Saga #27
Get ready to overdose on Fadeaway with Marko in the new issue of Saga! From Image Comics, Saga #27, written by Brian K. Vaughan, with art by Fiona Staples sends us tripping on the troublesome drug that Alana experimented with many issues ago. This time, it's Marko's turn as he tries it for the first time with Miss Yuma. When the issue began, I honestly thought that we were witnessing a flashback of a sexual moment between Marko and Alana, but when things got contorted and weird, I knew something was up. Throughout the issue we alternate between a flustered Ghus and Prince IV, and Marko's distorted flashbacks.
I want to talk about the intensity and serious content that's displayed throughout Marko's scenes, but first I want to mention the hilarity of Ghus and Prince IV's interactions. As Marko lies on the floor with foam coming out of his mouth, Prince IV contemplates letting him die. However, Ghus attempts to reason with him by stating how they need Marko's help. This of course makes Prince IV mad because he doesn't understand why they would need any assistance from someone other than him. The way Ghus explains the difference between how Marko makes him feel versus Prince IV literally made me laugh out loud. You can see that scene above. (Just as a side note, I think we can all agree that Ghus looks adorable in his pajamas, and I'd like to give him a hug.)
Moving on to the more serious content, I found Marko's flashback scenes to be powerful, and kind of heartbreaking. While there were moments that were enjoyable to see, others, like him being beaten by his father, were less amusing. I know that we've gotten character history that focused on Marko before, but this issue presents it in a way that is much more effective. When you gain a huge chunk of information about a character it brings a new layer of understanding to the surface. Marko has had some rough moments, and my faith in his character has waned at times. However, after reading this new issue, a lot of my faith is restored. Brian K. Vaughan writes a thorough, well-balanced script filled with pivotal moments. That, in combination with Fiona Staples imaginative art makes Saga #27 a memorable issue.
