Watchmensch Is Ten Years Old This Week

2019 is Bleeding Cool's tenth year. Doesn't time fly?

But this week is also the tenth anniversary of the publication of a very silly comic and utterly unauthorised parody of Watchmen I wrote called Watchmensch.

Drawn by Swedish artist Simon Rohrmuller and published by a very small publisher, Brain Scan Studios, it did far better than it had any right to do, and it is the comic I am most asked to sign. As in, I'm in double figures now.

It attempted to tell the history of New York comic book publishing using the characters and imagery of Watchmen, at the time when the Watchmen movie was nearing completion. And also detailing the dealng that Jerry Siegel and Joe Schuster had with DC Comics – as well as Alan Moore.

I have no idea wham, if anything Moore thought, though I did send him a copy and didn't revceive any furious comdemnations of thunder. Dave Gibbons told us "I laughed out loud at Watchmensch. Several times, in fact — and the climactic scene is more awesome than any squid!" Which was nice.

Anyway, I just wanted to say thank you for those who picked up a copy at the time. It was a very silly thing and you made me very happy. Thank you.

Ten years' later of course, there's a real Watchmensch doing the rounds, in the form of Doomsday Clock.

Which has got me thinking again… what about a comic in which our Dr Manhattan analogue 1600 Broadway is travelling from one world to another – from New York to Burbank – and finding a Batman Who Streaks, an exhibitionist Bruce Wayne who just wants to let it all hang out like Broadway can. And they concoct a scheme to make that happen, changing the timeline so that nudity is more acceptable in mainstream comic books.

What would it be called? Doomsday Cock, of course.

I bet I could get Simon interested… though a publisher may be harder.

I've no idea where you could track down copies of Watchmensch. Amazon are out of stock. Oh look, MyComicShop has copies at $6 each. So does eBay. But here are the addresses of comic stores that admitted to stocking it back then. It is possible that decision didn't drive all of the out of business.
