Blizzard Adds New Skins and Currency for Overwatch League, Gaining Praise and Criticism
After already making fans angry this week over the whole Mercy thing, Blizzard and the Overwatch team decided to do something that's earned them just as much criticism. Today, a new update was added to the game that introduced a new set of skins related to the Overwatch League that will be kicking off tomorrow. Right now, if you have a team you really like, you can purchase any skin for any team for any character you wish. You do so through a brand new currency system called League Tokens.
Now here's where the fun controversy comes into play. You can't get these skins through Loot Boxes, you can only purchase them using League Tokens. And League Tokens can only be earned one way: buying them with real cash. Right now $5 will get you 100 tokens, enough to buy you one skin. There are package plans that go up to $100 where you get 2,600 tokens, so enough to buy an entire team's set. Naturally, people are upset as it is clearly a cash grab by Blizzard for their own league, but if you think about it, this is no different than you buying your favorite player's jersey at an NBA game.
The new update also came with some adjustments and fixes, which you can read about here. What do you think of this new set of skins and the new currency?
