New Warcry Beasties Coming from Games Workshop

Right when I think I am ready to put down all of my Games Workshop goodies and explore other games, something amazing looking comes along and sucks me right back in. It happened a year ago with Kill Team, which got me pumped up over Warhammer: 40,000 as a setting for a while, but rules-bloat kicked in and helped me exert a little control over the hobby. But this year, Warcry has crept its way into my cold, brittle heart, and I find myself answering the call to Warhammer all over again!

Games Workshop has previewed a few glimpses at some great new beasts that are headed our way for Warcry, and I have to admit, they look fantastic!

Ogroid Myrmidon

He's big, bad, and hairy as hell! The Ogroid Myrmidon relies on sheer, brutal force to lead whatever warband it joins to victory. It's a wicked cool sculpt, too, an will look fantastic on game tables!

The Mindstealer Sphiranx brings some subtle mind-control work to your Warcry games, and it reminds me a bit of the Lying Cat from the Saga comics. There are two head options to choose from with this kit, so you can field two of the models without getting repetitive.

Both the Ogroid Myrmidon and the Mindstealer Sphiranx will be available for pre-order in the next few weeks, and should add a lot of flavor to your Warcry games!

My only concern going forward with Warcry is whether or not the game is going to start to suffer from the bloat that a lot of the Games Workshop games find themselves afflicted with. Kill Team was a pretty simple, stripped down game that allowed Warhammer: 40,000 fans a way to get a quick, fun game wedged into a busy day without a huge time commitment. But a year later, no one at my local game store is playing Kill Team, and the number one reason I hear for that is the sheer amount of supplemental material that ended up getting released killed their enthusiasm for the game.

Bloodbowl has something of the same problem: the kits look fantastic, but once you track down the supplemental rules for each team, you've probably sunk more time and money into getting ready to play than you really intended to in the first place. And no one wants to pirate this stuff, right? That's a slap in the face for the folks that worked so hard on the project to begin with!

So, here we are with Warcry, a fun, quick and dirty game set in the Warhammer: Age of Sigmar universe. So far, none of the new additions have killed my love of the game— here's hoping Games Workshop holds back on the throttle just a bit instead of drowning us all in material.

We'll have a lot more on Warcry and other Games Workshop news as we get it!
