The PS5 Controller May Have Gotten A Last-Minute Patent

A new patent has surfaced that got approval yesterday, showing that Sony had one more addition to the PS5 controller they needed to attach. Like a lot of things involving the PS5, not a lot of information has been released, only what people have been able to snag. Some keen-eyes users on Reddit found this little gem, an approved WIPO patent from December 26th, showing what the new controller will look like.

As you can see from the design, pretty much everything looks the same from the PS4 controller, including the fact they're keeping both thumbsticks. So that kills that rumor of them switching to just a single-thumbstick unit. Which, let's be honest, was ridiculous to believe in the first place. What they have added are four more buttons. Two on the bottom of the controller below the thumbsticks, and two on the back where your index fingers might go. The two on the bottom are to adjust the length of the handgrips to your liking, as the first diagram below shows they can be lowered. While the two on the back appear to be programmable buttons with no defined L/R lettering.

It's an interesting addition to the controller as they are basically offering what others like SCUF Gaming have been doing for a while now. Only this version feels like it's in a much more compact form. We'll see what the company officially labels them as in the future. For now, however, at least we know what kind of a controller setup we're getting.
