'Blade Runner 2049' Director Was "Loyal But Not Intimidated By" The Original
While Blade Runner 2049 director Denis Villeneuve has come to terms with the idea of failure that didn't mean that the cast and crew embraced their freedom and disregarded the original. Star Ryan Goslig spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about taking on the project and how they were "loyal but not intimidated" by the original. Gosling talked about how the original is iconic and that this new movie could answer some of the questions audiences were left with
"It's iconic for a reason. It's a very deep and powerful and haunting film," said the actor. "It leaves you with more questions than answers and, as a kid, I wasn't used to that. I was used to things being sewn up for me. It was exciting as a fan to know that some of those questions might get answered, and to go back into that universe and explore that world and see how things evolved."
The world change and evolving was one of the reasons that Gosling, Villeneuve, and the rest of the team couldn't hide in the shadow of the original if they were going to make a good movie.
"[Director Denis Villeneuve was] so loyal to the original, but at the same time wasn't intimidated by it."
Villeneuve went on to say that when Ridley Scott decided that a sequel was going to happen the first thing they did was see if Harrison Ford was interested. When he was Ford had to approve whoever wanted to take on the project.
"When Ridley decided to make a sequel, the first thing he did was to ask Harrison if he would be interested, because it would have been impossible to make the movie without him," he said. "So I had to meet Harrison, and have a discussion about what I wanted to do with the movie, so he felt comfortable with me taking the wheel."
Audiences at CineEurope were treated to a special behind-the-scenes featurette that has not been released to the public.
