We Can Thank Hugh Jackman For Taking A Paycut So 'Logan' Could Be R
The fact that an R rated Wolverine movie is due out in a couple of months seemed so baffling. The fact that even a few years ago it would be a hard to believe that it's happening. The X-Men movies have been bending over backwards to put a R rated weapon in PG-13 movies that it's almost laughable. Deadpool was likely the push that helped the 20th Century Fox executives give the green light but we might have to thank Hugh Jackman as well for getting us the R rated Wolverine movie we've been asking for.
According to a tweet from Aint It Cool New Eric Vespe Logan director James Mangold said after a screening of forty minutes of the movie that Jackman took a paycut to placate the executives. This makes sense because a large portion of the comic book movie attendees are under the age eighteen so an R rating can be very detrimental to the box office.
It wasn't just the R rating that made Deadpool as big as it was though; it as a genuine understanding of the material and a modest budget. I feel like Jackman taking a paycut to ensure that the movie gets the rating it needs is a good sign because it shows that the creative team understands how important it is to get this right. This is, supposedly, the last time we'll see Jackman's Wolverine.
Logan is directed James Mangold and stars Hugh Jackman, Boyd Holbrook, and Patrick Stewart. It opens March 3, 2017.
