[RUMOR] Channing Tatum Sought After For Dark Universe Van Helsing
Floating around the Hollywood Reporter and JoBlo is a rumor that Magic Mike, 21/22 Jump Street, and Hateful Eight actor Channing Tatum is being eyed for the role of Van Helsing in the upcoming Dark Universe shared continuity of movies by Universal Studios.
This is almost a bit of a surprise, given the absolute flop that the recent Mummy film turned out to be and the non-starter Dracula Untold. However, they seem to have sunk enough money into this animal, and they're going to beat a franchise out of it if it's the last thing they do.
Tatum would join the likes of Tom Cruise, Johnny Depp, Javier Bardem, and Russell Crowe, making for a pretty impressive lineup of big names for a franchise that hasn't been able to get its feet off the ground yet.
Personally, I hope they go the Van Helsing 2004 starring Hugh Jackman — that is one of the best bad movies ever made. It's ridiculous, stupid, and the acting is hammy. Make Channing Tatum a warrior professor with a ridiculous hat, a trench coat, and a freaking crossbow. Have him fight a menagerie of Victorian monsters. Bring in Jekyll and Hyde. Hell, they should retroactively make that Van Helsing a prequel to the Dark Universe, then sell special editions of the DVD.
You know you want to see Channing Tatum dressed like that and tussling with whatever poor Oscar-winning souls they end up casting as Dracula and Frankenstein's Monster. Also, bring David Wenham back as the friar sidekick. I'm sure he won't be up for returning to Iron Fist anytime soon after the reaction that series got.
Anyway, we'll keep an eye on this one. Maybe we'll get to see crossbow-toting, cheesy one-liner spewing Channing Van Helsing throwing down with Invisible Man Johnny Depp in a movie that will also make back a fraction of its budget in the next couple of years.
