Beyond the Spider-Verse: Jake Johnson Doesn't Know If He's Returning

Jack Johnson says that he is unsure whether or not Peter B. Parker will be returning for Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.

Article Summary

  • Jake Johnson is uncertain if he will voice Peter B. Parker in the upcoming film.
  • Behind-the-scenes issues have left Beyond the Spider-Verse without a release date.
  • Peter B. Parker's role is considered crucial to Miles Morales' storyline.
  • Johnson expresses a strong personal connection to his Spider-Verse character.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse was one of the rare sequels that was just as or nearly as good as the first movie, and that was a high bar to clear because that first film was brilliant. At the time, when the movie ended and everyone collectively realized that we were looking at a part one of two, the next movie, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, had a release date that wasn't too far away. However, some things happened behind the scenes, and now the film has been pulled from the release schedule and doesn't have a date at all. Since then, all of the updates we have heard have been vague promises that this will be a satisfying conclusion. Jake Johnson, who voiced Peter B. Parker in the first two films, recently told ComicBook.com that he isn't even sure if he's returning for Beyond the Spider-Verse.

"I love Peter B. Parker. I will say this: I would be so sad if I got a call that Peter B. Parker is not returning to the Spider-Verse because I feel really attached to that character," Johnson said. "And [Spider-Verse producer] Phil [Lord] and I will go out, or we'll text a lot, and I'm always pitching on Peter B., and I'm trying to fight to honor him. I want to make sure … He's funny, but he's our Spider-Man. He means something, and we always go back, and he means a lot to me as a character. I love playing him."

Miles and his relationship with Peter is one of the core elements of the first two movies and makes them both work. Across the Spider-Verse would have been a weaker film without Peter because the double betrayal from Peter and Gwen to Miles solidified how far they have fallen. We'll have to see if he returns for Beyond the Spider-Verse, but leaving out such a fundamental part of Miles' journey would seem like a poor decision.
