In 2020, the action-thriller film Extraction was released by Netflix (with a substantial budget of over $65 million). In its first month, the movie was streamed to more than 99 million households, becoming one of the streamer's biggest releases of all time. Naturally, a sequel followed in 2023, earning a generally positive reception with audiences and critics, receiving quick confirmation that a third installment was officially greenlit. However, considering that the second film dropped just last year, the team behind the popular franchise clearly isn't preparing to rush into production at this very moment.
However, according to the film's writer, there are still plenty of stories to tell within the film's universe — including a potential origin story for the movie's popular protagonist.
Extraction Writer Joe Russo Says a Third Entry is Still Being Developed
When chatting with GamesRadar, Extraction franchise writer Joe Russo was asked about the status of the third entry, and he proceeded to suggest that it's still in the realm of possibilities. Russo optimistically tells the site, "Yeah, we're developing it at the moment, figuring out [Chris Hemsworth's] schedule. Sam Hargrave is back directing. It's an interesting franchise because he's a very emotionally wounded character, so there's good storytelling there I think in respect to his backstory, and, you know, his relationship to violence is one that's built around self-loathing and guilt." Russo concludes, "And so, it adds a lot of texture, I think, which allows us to tell more stories about him."
The synopsis of the first Extraction film: A black-market mercenary who has nothing to lose is hired to rescue the kidnapped son of an imprisoned international crime lord. But in the murky underworld of weapons dealers and drug traffickers, an already deadly mission approaches the impossible.
