Gemma Chan Says Crazy Rich Asians 2 and 3 Will Be Shot Back-to-Back
One of the big surprises of 2018 was just how well Crazy Rich Asians ended up doing at the domestic box office. It was a critical smash and was one of the rare romantic comedies that everyone seemed to like. It's not often these days that a movie gets over 60% of its box office grosses from the domestic box office. The mid-August release schedule meant that the movie had little competition for weeks and could just clean up. It made a lot of "best of 2018" lists. It's not surprising that Warner Bros. wants to make the latter two books into movies. However, it looks like shooting movies back-to-back isn't just for genre movies anymore. Gemma Chan was on the red carpet for Captain Marvel and The Hollywood Reporter asked about the two upcoming sequels.
"I've heard maybe next year we shoot [Crazy Rich Asians 2 and 3] back-to-back," said Chan, who plays the fashionable Astrid in the romantic series. "I think they are writing it."
If they aren't shooting until 2020 then we're going to have to wait until at least 2021 to see the first sequel. However, if they are shooting them back-to-back, Crazy Rich Asians 2 and 3 will likely be released within a year of each other.
Summary: The story follows Rachel Chu, an American-born Chinese economics professor, who travels to her boyfriend Nick's hometown of Singapore for his best friend's wedding. Before long, his secret is out: Nick is from a family that is impossibly wealthy, he's perhaps the most eligible bachelor in Asia, and every single woman in his ultra-rarefied social class is incredibly jealous of Rachel and wants to bring her down.
Crazy Rich Asians, directed by Jon M. Chu, stars Constance Wu, Henry Golding, Michelle Yeoh, Gemma Chan, Lisa Lu, and Awkwafina. It's out on home release now.
