James Cameron Talks Jake and Neytiri's Family in Avatar 2

The fact that we're getting a sequel to Avatar more than a decade after the first movie has come out is surprising enough sometimes. It's even weirder to think about the fact that we're getting four more movies. The first of those movies drops next year but, at the moment, we don't know anything about them. It sounds like we're getting some new details though from Avatar – An Empire 30th Anniversary Podcast Documentary with James Cameron and he gave some details about Jake and Neytiri's family in the upcoming sequel.

"There's a three-page argument scene between Jake and Neytiri, a marital dispute, very, very critical to the storyline," Cameron explains on the Avatar Podumentary. "I wound up shooting it all from the point of view of the eight year old hiding under the structure and peeking in […] Having gone through the experience with [Sam Worthington] on Avatar, I now knew how to write the Jake character going forward across the emotional rollercoaster of the next four movies. It's been tough on him. He's done two pictures back to back now, because we did 2 and 3 together. He had to go to some dark places."

There have been some reports that the back-to-back shoots of Avatar 2 and Avatar 3 were not wrapped entirely turned out to be true. Cameron explained how the process worked for shooting a movie with so much performance capture animation.

"[Performance-capture] is the vast majority of the characters, and that is the vast majority of the running time of the film," claims the filmmaker, "but that pesky little live-action component is going to cost me five months of my life, across the two movies."

It's interesting to hear how Cameron is splitting up the shooting of these two movies that way but you have to give people breaks or they will lose their minds. You would think they would approach it the same way the Russo Brothers did with the two Avengers movies; shoot one, take a break and shoot the other. It's going to be interesting to see how these two movies hold up considering this shooting style. Will the movies have a hard time feeling distinctive because of this shooting schedule? We'll have to see.

Avatar 2, directed by James Cameron, stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang, Giovanni Ribisi, Joel David Moore, Dileep Rao, CCH Pounder, and Matt Gerald. It will be released on December 18th, 2020. Avatar 3 will open December 17th, 2021, Avatar 4 is set of December 20th, 2024, and Avatar 5 will open December 19th, 2025.
