Kevin Feige Talks About a More Diverse Future for the Marvel Cinematic Universe

Captain Marvel is the first Marvel movie to have a solo female lead and a female director. So it's time for everyone to talk about the importance of diversity yet again. In this case, it means that a bunch of people who work at Marvel are insisting that change is on the horizon but not offering any real proof that they intend to follow through with it. The Wrap recently spoke to Kevin Feige and he said how important it was that there was a female voice behind the camera.

"Anna [Boden] and her directing partner, Ryan [Fleck], did an amazing job, and made the movie what it is, so yes, so we did believe it was very important that this story be told with a female voice behind the camera, many female voices behind the camera in this case," said Feige. "It's all about going forward. We won't discuss anything past 'Endgame' and 'Spider-Man: Far From Home,' but there are many things coming."

He went on to talk about how people ask him about Black Panther and whether or not that movie was a "fluke".

"People also ask sometimes about 'Black Panther.' So, the notion of representation on screen, in front of and behind the camera, somebody asked me once, so is 'Black Panther' a one-off? I said, no, it's not a one-off. This is the future. This is the way the world is, and the way, certainly, our studio's going to be run going forward, because it brings about better stories. The more diverse the group of people making the movie is, the better the stories," added Feige.

As always, Marvel continues to talk about how important it is but until we see some real changes they are all just words. There is more to representation than just making sure people of color are on screen and sometimes a woman. There is representation of sexuality which the MCU has never really explored. There is representation of someone with a disability. For example, Sony could have grabbed a ton of headlines if they used the Flash Thompson version of Venom. Flash is a disabled veteran which would have been great to see on screen.

Perhaps, the new phase of Marvel will be different. Right now we've all heard these lines before and until we start seeing it end up on the big screen they're just pretty words.

Summary: Carol Danvers becomes one of the universe's most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races.

Captain Marvel, directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, will also star Brie Larson, Jude Law, Gemma Chan, Djimon Hounsou, Lee Pace, Lashana Lynch, Samuel L. Jackson. The film is set for release on March 8th, 2019.
