'Madam Secretary' Creator Barbara Hall Developing CIA Spy Drama For CBS
CBS has a new drama series in the works from Madam Secretary creator Barbara Hall and the former CBS Entertainment president Glenn Geller. Variety is reporting that the new series, called Family Business, would focus on a multi-generational CIA spy family told from the point of view of the youngest generation made up of three adult siblings struggling with rivalry, secrets, and making their own name in the intelligence community.
Geller and Hall will both executive produce for CBS Television while Hall will also write on the project. Along with Madam Secretary, Hall has a long successful career with CBS where she also created the series Judging Amy (ran for six seasons) and Joan of Arcadia (ran for two seasons). She's also worked on Homeland, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Army Wives, and Northern Exposure.
This is the first project under the development deal Geller set up after he officially stepped down as president of CBS Entertainment in May. He initially took a leave of absence in March after suffering a heart attack, but his plans to return in may changed and he stepped down. He was replaced by the scheduling chief, Kelly Kahl, while the CW's Thom Sherman was named senior executive vice president of programming. Geller had take the president position in fall of 2015, replacing Nina Tassler.
