The Bioshock Movie Is Finally Happening at Netflix
Mere hours after we finally got the chance to see a video game movie that has been in active development since 2008, Netflix announced that they are bringing yet another video game movie that has been in on and off development since 2008 to the big screen. In 2008 they announced the Uncharted film, and it was also announced that the critically acclaimed Bioshock was also getting a film adaptation. However, 2008 was a different time, and it was still very common for properties based on comic books or video games to be a little ashamed of their source material. The people who were initially involved in the film, which was officially canceled in 2013, wanted to make something that was true to the source material. Now we're in 2022, and nerds rule the world, so it's not surprising that Netflix has jumped in and is making the Bioshock movie that [hopefully] fans have been dreaming about since 2008.
Netflix is partnering with 2K and Take-Two Interactive to produce a film adaptation of the renowned video game franchise "BioShock."
Producers: Vertigo Entertainment; 2K, a subsidiary of Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc.
About BioShock: Published by 2K, a subsidiary of Take-Two Interactive Software Inc., the award-winning and critically-acclaimed BioShock game franchise includes BioShock, BioShock 2 and BioShock Infinite. Set across multiple dystopian and visionary landscapes gone wrong, the series blends sci-fi and horror to pose unique existential and societal questions that reshaped how game stories could be told – all amidst pulse-pounding action gameplay that rewards sharp shooting, clever planning, and lethal improvisation. Across the titles' original releases as well as multiple re-releases, remastered editions and bundled collections, BioShock has sold more than 39 million copies worldwide, and is widely recognized as one of the most celebrated and beloved series in all of gaming. The next installment is currently in development by Cloud Chamber.
We just posted our review for Uncharted. We talked about the difference between interactive and inactive mediums and how video games have had the unique challenge when it comes to adaptation. However, the Uncharted games have always had a rather generic story [not a dig, just a fact] so the developers could focus on other things. Bioshock, however, while not the most unique thing in the world, does tend to be more original, and a director could really make the city of Rapture look like something special. We don't have any further details, but we'll keep eager fans updated once Netflix reveals more.
