SDCC 2017: Will Smith Cracks Jokes At Netflix's 'Bright' Panel

Imagine a world where people are judged and treated differently because of the way they look. OK, well, you really don't have use your imagination for that one. But now imagine adding creatures like orcs, fairies, and elves into that world. That's what you'll get with Netflix's original movie Bright.

The people behind this movie are extraordinary. The screenwriter is none other than the extremely talented Max Landis (Chronicle, American Ultra). It's directed by hardcore hombre Mr. David Ayer (Fury, End of Watch) and stars Will Smith and Joel Edgerton as two LAPD officers with a twist. Smith's character Daryl Ward is a human, and Edgerton's character Nick Jakoby is an orc. At the Bright panel at San Diego Comic-Con, Smith joked that it's nice that he, as a black man, gets to play a racist character for once.

After premiering a brand-new trailer, the plot of the movie became clear, and it's rather intriguing. There's a supervillain "bright" (a person with superpowers) played by Noomi Rapace, who loses a powerful magical sword and it is discovered by a novice bright, Tikka, played by Lucy Fry. Rapace's character is after the sword and will tear apart the streets of Los Angeles to find Tikka. So Daryl and Nick do their best to protect Tikka and keep the sword out of the bad bright's hands (which is a difficult task).

They also played an action-packed scene where Daryl and Tikka are at a gas station and the villainous bright, accompanied by her men, drives straight through the station. There's nonstop action after this point. There's gunplay, hand-to-hand combat, and a giant explosion! It's chock-full of quick cuts to keep things intense.

Bright will stream to Netflix starting December 22nd, just in time for Christmas.
