Black Lightning Season 1: Why Lala was the Best Returning Guest
Okay, Black Lightning is a new series and really doesn't have a returning guest from a previous season. But that said, how many of you guessed that Latavius "Lala" Johnson (William Catlett) was going to pop up again after he was killed by Tobias Whale (Marvin "Krondon" Jones III) in that prison cell? The character came off as instantly charismatic and dangerous at the same time when he threatened that kid in front of Jefferson Pierce (Cress Williams). He was in control of his turf, and while he respected what Pierce was doing, he wouldn't let him interfere with his business.
At first I thought Lala was the better character than Tobias. He was more complex and interesting while Tobias was more of a stereotypical bad guy at first. And then we got to see his downfall. Caught by a grieving mother who sacrificed herself to stop the man responsible for her daughter's death. And when in prison, Tobias arrives and kills him with his bare hands. I was a little bummed — I'd been enjoying the character.
Then suddenly he was back and having some weird stuff going on. I didn't see any of that coming. Tobias brought him back to life and controlled him. He began seeing the people he'd killed, and they became tattoos on his body. I was hooked again, watching him skate the line of insanity while trying to get his turf back. But the season ended with him going into the ASA headquarters with a bomb in his belly and then exploding. Is that really the end of Lala, or will he be back in season 2? I'm hoping he'll be back, because he really is a good character.
