Crisis On Earth-X Brings Big Ratings For Supergirl And Arrow

We're just halfway through Crisis on Earth-X — the four-hour, four-series, two-night Arrowverse crossover event — and it is obviously bigger than what they did last year with Invasion. The timing and logistics involved in bringing together four separate shows into basically one giant movie/mini-series has to be quite daunting.

Actors like Stephen Amell and Melissa Benoist are in almost every scene, and Grant Gustin, Caity Lotz, Tom Cavanagh and the rest of the cast aren't far behind. And, while doing a story of this scope must be fun and crazy at the same time. The question of whether it's worth doing has to come up at some point. Does it make sense to interrupt all of these series to tell a story like this? And how to do measure that?

Fan reaction would be my first thought, and so far, Twitter and Facebook are filled with positive comments about the event. But the world is run by accountants, and they like numbers, hence the television rating system. And those numbers are positive, as well.

The adage of "the more, the merrier" seems to apply when it comes to superhero crossovers. The opening hour of Crisis on Earth-X was an episode of Supergirl, and it brought in 2.65 million total viewers and a 0.9 rating. That's up 40 and 80 percent from the series' previous episode and is its largest episode since January 23rd.

The second part, an episode of Arrow, followed up with a 2.54 million total viewers and a 0.9 rating, more than double last Thursday's episode.

Now, this is both good and bad news. The ratings are up against normal episodes, but down from last year's crossover. Supergirl's part of Invasion pulled a 3.5 million/1.1 rating, and Arrow's part, which was also the shows 100th episode, got 3.6 million/1.3 rating. That might mean that viewers prefer Alien bad guys to Nazis, but according to TVLine, the CW had their most-watched Monday night sine January 12th, 2009 and their highest rating for a Monday since April 25th, 2011.
