Dolph Lundgren on Filming Always Sunny/"Thundergun," Flip a Cöin
Dolph Lundgren (Wanted Man) spoke with Bleeding Cool about Maximum Effort's Flip a Cöin and filming FXX's It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
Dolph Lundgren is one of the most renowned action stars of our generation. Aside from his presence on screen playing both villains and heroes, the Swedish actor is also an accomplished martial artist and chemical engineer, the latter he was allowed to show in The Expendables franchise. Always looking for ways to challenge himself, he also directs, produces, and writes like his contemporary and Rocky IV (1985) co-star and frequent collaborator Sylvester Stallone. While promoting his upcoming project in Quiver Distribution's Wanted Man, which he stars, directs, and writes, Lundgren spoke to Bleeding Cool about his upcoming Swedish reality project Flip a Cöin for Ryan Reynolds' Maximum Effort Channel and his memorable appearance in the season 14 episode of FXX's It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia "Thunder Gun 4: Maximum Cool".
What Is Flip a Cöin?
Bleeding Cool: You're in a new show for the Maximum Effort Channel called 'Flip A Cöin.' How did that get pitched to you and the process?
Lundgren: It was interesting; the pitch was bizarre. Somebody came to me and said, "You know, Ryan Reynolds and those guys, you're doing a new show? A comedy show is you flipping a coin for 30 minutes." Episode two is like episode one, more or less, just different angles. I thought, "Hmm, okay, maybe they know something I don't. "They had a good director, and they had good visuals, elements, and storyboards, and they want to make it look like an Ikea, very Scandinavian, and everything is white and super serious, like Ingmar Bergman. I thought, "This is funny. I haven't done anything like that" I was on board for that, for sure.
Will Lundgren Come Back to 'Sunny' for a Johnny Thundergun Spinoff?
In the 2019 episode "Thunder Gun 4: Maximum Cool", Mac (Rob McElhenney), Charlie (Charlie Day), Dee (Kaitlin Olson), and Frank (Danny DeVito) are asked to be the focus group for Lundgren's final film in the fictional franchise as his character John Thundergun leads a generational "passing of the torch" to his "son" to be the next hero much to the annoyance to the coordinator.
The guys from 'It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia' are big action fans and they love your work, and they got you doing a cameo for doing the John Thundergun test market episode. I was wondering, was there anything discussed beyond appearance in the episode? Was there anything that in the future that they might want to ever expand upon perhaps with Rob McElhenney, like an animated series or something, or an actual spinoff down the line?
I don't know, I haven't heard anything, but I know it was a big thing for the fans, but I haven't heard anything, so I guess it's up to them to decide.
What was it like filming that episode? Did it feel like a run-of-the-mill thing where they're bouncing back with you all this?
It was a lot of fun for me. I had to do research, go back, and look at the episodes and what they had before, which I didn't know about. They shot that in L.A., and I had a good time doing it. It was certainly fun.
Wanted Man, which also stars Kelsey Grammer, Michael Paré, Christina Villa, and Roger Cross is in theaters, on-demand, and digital on January 19th.
