House of the Dragon Showrunner on "Blood & Cheese" Fallout & More

House of the Dragon showrunner Ryan Condal on the Blood & Cheese fallout in the episode "Rhaenyra the Cruel," assassination plots, and more.

The latest House of the Dragon episode, "Rhaenyra the Cruel," follows the fallout from the infamous "Blood & Cheese" moment recreated from George R.R. Martin's Fire & Blood in the season two premiere episode, "A Son for a Son". The shocking ending to that episode is how Blood (Sam C. Wilson) and Cheese (Mark Stobbart) were paid off by Prince Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) to kill Prince Aemond Targaryen (Ewan Mitchell) as revenge for killing Prince Lucerys Velaryon (Elliot Grihault) in the season one finale. When the two didn't find their target, the two instead kill the young Jaeharys, decapitating him off-screen at the end of "A Son for a Son." Creator and showrunner Ryan Condal spoke to Variety about the aftermath. The following contains major spoilers.

During Jaeharys' funeral scene, Condal describes the scene and how it helps set the mood for what's to come. "No, that was not a specific thing we were looking for," Condal said when asked if he expected the head to fall out. "Just the danger of moving a body through a public square like that. It's a very moving sequence. Sara Hess pitched that in the room, making a funeral procession a public show and marching Jaehaerys' body — and showing the fact that they had cut his head off and then stitched it back onto his body — through the public square as a way of diminishing Rhaenyra [Emma D'Arcy] and her claim, to try to create a monster out of her. A great Otto Hightower [Rhys Ifans] plot that obviously does have some effect to win points for the greens' side."

Since his son was murdered, King Aegon II Targaryen (Tom Glynn-Carney) is out for blood and revenge, with his temperament at a boiling point. He hangs all the rat catchers (including the co-assassin) within King's Landing for the public to see, to the disgust of Otto, who promptly scolds him. After Otto speaks his mind, Aegon fires his Hand and gives the title to Ser Criston Cole (Fabien Frankel), who was not at his post to protect the prince when it went down – tending to "matters" with Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke). For more, including Condal discussing the status of book characters Daeron and Nettles – and if they'll make an appearance in House of the Dragon, you can check out the complete interview. House of the Dragon airs on Sundays on HBO and streams on Max.
