The five-episode crime thriller Devil's Peak has been acquired by Tubi for broadcast in the U.S. and Canada. Based on Deon Meyer's acclaimed 2004 novel, the series is described as a multi-layered crime thriller set in Cape Town, featuring tormented Detective Benny Griessel. The series originated on M-Net in South Africa and was updated and adapted for television by writer Matthew Orton (Disney+'s Moon Knight, Captain America: Brave New World).
Detective Benny Griessel (Hilton Pelser) is on the trail of a vigilante who metes out justice for his own heart-wrenching reasons. The saga pushes Griessel to his limits, challenging his ideals, and soon has him questioning the integrity of his pursuit. Thobela Mpayipheli (Sisanda Henna ) is a former mercenary turned vigilante who is seeking justice for the murder of his son. Mpayipheli has also been featured in two prior books by Meyer, beginning with 1998's Dead at Daybreak. Along the way, both Griessel and Mpayipheli cross paths with Christine van Rooyen (Tarryn Wyngaard), a mother willing to do anything to find a better life for her daughter.
According to Orton, he did extensive research to update and expand the story with Meyer's blessing. The Dante's Peak novel, published in 2004, was the first of eight books featuring the Griessel character. Pesler has described Benny Griessel as a dark, tormented character, noting that his research for the role helped him put himself into the character's frame of mind. "A lot of the detectives that we spoke to beforehand talked about the nightmares and the night terrors and the voices of the victims they couldn't save."
Devil's Peak also includes Shamilla Miller, Gérard Rudolf, Masasa Mbangeni, Litha Bam, Tshamano Sebe, Lee Roodt, and Soli Philander. It is directed by Jozua Malherbe. Orton, Laura Lankester of Lookout Point, Francis Hopkinson of Expanded Media, plus Nomsa Philiso, Yolisa Phahle, and Allan Sperling of M-Net executive produced.
