Green Bay Packers Looking for New General Manager and Defensive Coordinator
The Green Bay Packers are a bit of an anomaly in the NFL. They don't have a specific owner, but are owned by the city of Green Bay. The people of Green Bay own the team and they come out and support it like they own it. There is also a very familial feel to the team. They also do things quieter than other teams, like both their head coach, Mike McCarthy, and their general manger, Ted Thompson, got one-year extensions during the season. But it wasn't announced.
As a result of not making the playoffs, regardless of the fact that they lost arguably the best quarterback in the NFL, Aaron Rodgers, for the majority of the season, the team has made some big changes. They've fired longtime defensive coordinator Dom Capers, as well as defensive assistants Scott McCurley (inside linebackers coach) and Mike Trgovac (D-Line coach). But the surprising news besides the unannounced extensions was the reassignment of Thompson to senior adviser to football operations — meaning the team will be looking for a new general manager.
The year extension for McCarthy will keep him on the team through 2019, making it easier for him to try to find a good defensive coordinator. There is also talk about changes on the offensive side of the ball where receivers coach Luke Getsy has left to be offensive coordinator for Mississippi State. The current offensive coordinator for Green Bay is Edgar Bennett, who used to be receivers coach, and there is talk of moving him back — meaning the team might need a new OC along with a DC.
Packers president Mark Murphy will conduct a search to find Thompson's replacement. Murphy says the new GM will have authority over McCarthy, but that McCarthy will be the coach going forward. That could easily be addressed by getting someone already familiar with McCarthy like internal options Russ Ball, Brian Gutekunst, Eliot Wolf, and Alonzo Highsmith, or outside candidates like John Schneider, current GM for Seattle, or Reggie McKenzie, current GM for Oakland.
Why hang on to McCarthy? The man is 131-78-1, including 10-8 in the postseason and one Super Bowl win in his 12 NFL seasons. Not a lot of coaches available with that kind of record.
