Out Of Luck: The Indianapolis Colts Start Season Without Andrew Luck
One of the surprise moves over the last few days was the trade between the Indianapolis Colts and the New England Patriots.
The Colts picked up quarterback Jacoby Brissett from the Pats for wide receiver Phillip Dorsett. The move made a lot of sense for the Patriots, who had just lost slot receiver Julian Edelman for the year, a position that Dorsett could fill. The move didn't make that much sense from the Colts perspective. They have their franchise starter Andrew Luck and a back-up quarterback they like in Scott Tolzien. The answer to why came today, as the Colts have ruled Luck out for the season opener against the Los Angeles Rams.
Luck hasn't practiced with the team since the final week of 2017. He had right shoulder surgery during the off-season for an injury occured in week three of 2015. Luck has been on the physically unable to perform list up until Saturday, which makes him eligible to play. But according to team officials, Luck isn't ready. Tolzien will get the start with Brissett as the back-up. If the Colts had not taken Luck off the PUP list, he would've had to miss the first six weeks of the season.
As he enters his sixth season, the Colts fate rests squarely on Luck's shoulders. In his first three seasons, Luck took all of the teams meaningful snaps, and they went to the playoffs all three times. In the last two seasons, Luck has missed a total of 10 games, and the Colts have missed the post-season both times. The team went 6-4 without Luck.
Seventh year vet Tolzien used to back up Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay before coming to the Colts last year. He has only played in nine games in his NFL career, completing 79 of 128 passes for two touchdowns and seven interceptions. Brissett is 34 for 55 in three appearances for the Patriots last season and is just going into his second year. Brissett impressed a lot of people in the fourth preseason game — it is possible, if Luck is out for more than a game or two, that Brissett could move past Tolzien on the depth chart.
I think this new will make the Los Angeles Rams feel Lucky.
