The Gifted Season 2: Matt Nix Talks That Final Scene and What it Could Mean for Season 3

The Gifted aired the season two finale and with it, they managed to both tie up a bunch of loose ends but also set something big up for the potential third season. At the moment we don't know whether or not there is going to be a third season but showrunner Matt Nix spoke to TV Line about what he would like to see in a third season and what he thinks the odds are for a renewal. However, to get into it we're going to throw up a spoiler warning. If you don't want to know how the second season of The Gifted you should skip this article.

In the final moments of the episode, the newly formed Muntant Underground heads outside when John realizes that he senses something. Clarice appears looking very different from the last time we saw her. The hair is different, her outfit looks very futuristic, and the portal she came through looks like the world is on fire. She tells them to come with her and we don't know what happens after this. If that sounds a little familiar then you must be familiar with the storyline of Days of Future Past. Nix was asked about the fact that it looks like time has passed for Clarice since she seems to have better control of her powers.

The interesting thing about Blink is that in the comics, there have been a fair number of versions of the character. The fact is, she's manipulating dimensions, traveling via these portals. She talked in the previous episode about how when she felt her worst, she imagined going into a portal that went nowhere and being in the spaces in between. So the idea was that — although she doesn't understand it completely either — when she gets shot and falls into that maelstrom of portal energy, she is in the spaces in between things. And that is a place that is sort of "out of time."

So, that's Nix more or less confirming the fact that we're going into time travel and he when pressed about it be confirmed it.

Where, and when, and what does it mean? It's something that hopefully we get to explore at some time in the future, but the idea there is that she's been taken to new places and seen new possibilities. And if nothing else, she somehow she had the opportunity to change clothes! [Laughs]

The main conflicts in season two were between the Purifier's, the Mutant Underground, and the Inner Circle. It came down to everyone fighting over the idea of integration versus separation on various levels. Nix was asked what the main conflict in this third season would be.

What I really want to explore is, in a world where mutants and humans are largely living separately, and even though mutants are all theoretically on the same side, how do they police themselves? What would it be like to live in a community of all mutants, where people have different powers, different agendas…? The second season was about these different factions debating how they're going to deal with the humans, and I'd really like the opportunity to explore mutants taking positions on how they should deal with themselves. Do they have a moral obligation to the larger society? If you have these powers, do you have an obligation to use them for other people, or just for yourself?

A world just for mutants is what the Inner Circle was trying to accomplish and they thought it would be a utopia. We saw the vision of what they thought the future would be in the first episode. It sounds like Nix wanted to explore what that would look like with a little more realism and cynicism.

Exactly, yeah. I always think it's interesting to give characters what they wish for and then explore the complications of getting what you wanted.

As for the renewal the odds Nix doesn't seem that confident it's going to happen. Unfortunately, the numbers really suffered this second season and they weren't overly high to begin with. Nix acknowledges that while the live numbers are not very good the streaming numbers have been a lot better. Shows like Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Lucifer, both were Fox properties that were canceled and then saved by networks, had strong fanbases via streaming.

What doesn't work in our favor is the obvious — we would like our ratings to be higher as a primetime network show. [Note: The Gifted is Fox's lowest rated, least watched drama.] What works in our favor is that we are a show that has had a pretty decent life on streaming. And I think beyond that, because of how the story is situated, we can stay out of the way of a lot of the larger [Marvel] universe. It's not likely that in any short term anybody is going to be doing anything that could be incompatible with what we've done, if that makes sense. We don't have versions of the X-Men running around, [and the characters we use] are not smack dab in the middle of the mythology, so we're not stepping on anybody's toes.

The other thing is it's my understanding that we're doing pretty well internationally. Emma Dumont (who plays Lorna) just went to China and there were a lot of girls who really, really wanted to hang out with her. [Laughs] Superheroes with strong emotions and action seem to travel well.

Nix also acknowledges that Fox studios and TV spitting means there is even less of a chance that the show is going to be renewed. However, stranger things have happened and Nix says that he would "love for them to renew us, and there are surprises all the time. Hopefully, we'll get one of those surprises." For now, fans should keep tweeting about the show to show their support and watching episodes on Hulu. We might have to wait until May to find out the fate of The Gifted.

Action-adventure family drama THE GIFTED, from Marvel, tells the story of a suburban couple whose ordinary lives are rocked by the sudden discovery that their children possess mutant powers. Forced to go on the run from a hostile government, the family joins up with an underground network of mutants and must fight to survive.

Created by Matt Nix, FOX's The Gifted stars Stephen Moyer, Amy Acker, Natalie Alyn Lind, Percey Hynes White, Sean Teale, Emma Dumont, Jamie Chung, and Blair Redford. Seasons one and two are currently streaming on Hulu.
