The Secret Wars Game That Wasn't – And Saw Heads Roll

Last year, Marvel Games changed. They fired seven long standing senior employees as the division of Marvel Entertainment began to make big changes. The emphasis on moving from licensing rights to gaming companies and then monitoring how those rights were managed, shifter to something closer to the modern Marvel Studios method of making the games themselves, employing people to make those games, or engaging in a much closer relationship with the game publishers.

And that was the official reason given for such long standing individuals being let go, when asked.

The unofficial reason given to me, however? The Secret Wars game.

There have already been announcements of a number of Secret Wars-related games ahead of Marvel's big summer. But I understand that a much larger Secret Wars game project was planned, the kind of game that could go toe to toe with the bigger in the industry.

But, last year, it was clear that it was not going to come together in the way that Marvel has wanted. And so, changes to the entire Marvel gaming division were made.

Heads rolled. And Bill Rosemann was brought in to kick some arse and make sure nothing like this happened again…
