Netflix Vs Marvel Over What If?

What If? is a longstanding Marvel comic book series, that features alternate historie sin the Marvel Universe. What If Jean Grey Lived? What If Spider-Man joined the Fantastic Four? What If Wolverine Was The Punisher?

Recently, as the Marvel Studios movies began introducing the Multiverse as a concept, and showed a number of alternate timelines in Avengers: Endgame – seemingly with more to come in Spider-Man: Far From Home and Marvel's Agents Of SHIELD, so a Disney + series began to be talked about.

An animated anthology series that takes moments from the Marvel Cinematic Universe and plays them out along difrerent lines, one episode including a reworking of the What If? #47 story, "What if Loki had found the hammer of Thor?"

Marvel trademarked What If? for comics back in 1993, renewed back in June 2014. Which means it may need a renewal later this year. But that's for comics

In March, one Don M. Buckner of Florida trademarked the works What If for Entertainment in the nature of ongoing television programs in the field of history.

Well, looks like Netflix has beaten everyone to the punch, announcing a new series launching on May 24th starring Renée Zellweger called What/If.

A raw, voyeuristic examination of acceptable people doing unacceptable things– A conflict driven series of high stakes morality plays with a first season narrative focusing on two struggling newlyweds who accept a powerful woman's ethically perilous proposition to secure a badly needed financial windfall.

Desperate to secure funding for her med tech startup, an idealistic scientist and her husband strike an outrageous deal with a mysterious investor.

It is likely that if the Disney + deal had never gone down, that Marvel may have pushed the animated series What If through Netflix. With Netflix pushing out all the Marvel series now that Disney + is coming, the titles of this show looks a little… calculated.
