A New Look for Poison Ivy and The Joker in Harley Quinn: Breaking Glass

Mariko Tamaki and Steve Pugh will see their YA graphic novel that, when announced was part of DC Comics' Ink imprint, published this week. Harley Quinn: Breaking Glass with a free preview issue in comic stores to try and hook unsuspecting folk.

Steve Pugh is a legendary comic book industry artist, with notable runs on Animal Man, Hellblazer, 2000AD, Invaders, Flintstones, Generation X, Blade, Doom 2099 and more as well as co-creator with Warren Ellis on Hotwire. But this is what he has been concentrating on for the last year plus, written by Mariko Tamaki.

No stranger to comics, Tamaki has written a number of YA novels, but also writing and drawing  graphic novels such as Skim, Emiko Superstar, This One Summer, as well as writing Hulk for Marvel, Supergirl: Being Super for DC Comics and upcoming graphic novel with Rosemary Valero-O'Connell titled Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up with Me earlier this year. She has also been writing novel adaptations of the Lumberjanes comics.

And, as a non-continuity take on the Harley Quinn-and-related characters, it has given her and Pugh the chance to vary more widely in their portrayal of the characters…

With just five dollars and a knapsack to her name, 15-year-old Harleen Quinzel is sent to live in Gotham City. She's not worried, though-she's battled a lot of hard situations as a kid, and knows her determination and outspokenness will carry her through life in the most dangerous city in the world. And when Gotham's finest drag queen, Mama, takes her in, it seems like Harley has finally found a place to grow into her most "true true" with new best friend Ivy at Gotham High. But when Mama's drag cabaret becomes the next victim in the wave of gentrification that's taking over the neighborhood, Harley's fortune takes another turn.
Now Harleen is mad. In turning her anger into action, she is faced with two choices: join activist Ivy, who's campaigning to make the neighborhood a better place to live, or team up with her anarchist friend Joker, who plans to take down Gotham one corporation at a time.
