Never Trust Doctor Doom in X-Men/Fantastic Four #2 [X-ual Healing 2-26-20]

There were five X-books out last week: X-Men #7, X-Force #8, Giant-Size X-Men: Jean Grey and Emma Frost #1, X-Men/Fantastic Four #2, and New Mutants #8. In addition to that, I missed New Mutants #7 from the prior week, so I'll be recapping that too. Let's find out what happened in last week's X-books…

Sworn to sell comics for Marvel executives who feared and hated the fact that Fox owned their movie rights, The Uncanny X-Men suffered great indignities, but thanks to a corporate merger and a line-wide relaunch, the X-Men can finally get back to doing what they do best: being objectively the best franchise in all of comics.

What happened in X-Men/Fantastic Four #2?

Cyclops skypes with the Fantastic Four to deny that the X-Men kidnapped Reed and Sue's kids. Besides, if they were gonna kidnap anyone, it would just be Franklin. Valeria is a human. This makes Sue mad because it's discrimination against humans to kidnap one kid and not the other. She breaks the skype machine. The Fantastic Four prepare to invade Krakoa.

Meanwhile, Kate Pryde wakes up on Doom Island, where Doctor Doom has prepared a nice meal for her, Franklin, and Valeria. Doom claims he's always been a friend to mutants and wants to help them. He also wants to help Franklin Richards by solving the problem of his power depletion. Back at Krakoa, the council receives a report from Multiple Man that the Marauder has been found off the coast of Japan, but it's empty. Could be worse — everyone could be quarantined for coronavirus. Xavier locates Kate Pryde with telepathy and the council discusses assembling a team to retrieve her, but Nightcrawler realizes that the Fantastic Four are probably there spying on them invisibly and it turns out they are. A fight breaks out.

On Doom Island, Doom references helping Kate during Fantastic Four vs. X-Men and then brings Franklin to his lab so he can fix him too… but there's a catch. Before we learn what that catch is, we catch up with the X-Men vs. Fantastic Four battle on Krakoa, which is going poorly for the Fantastic Four because Sue has been knocked out. The Fantastic Four are wearing telepathy-proof suits, and Reed has the idea to briefly remove Sue's helmet, allowing Emma to telepathically attack Sue, which wakes Sue up. Reed then shuts the suit. The Fantastic Four escape with Sue's help. On Doom Island, Kate lets the other Marauders out of the cell they've been kept in and lets them know they're cool with Doom now. Cut to Doom, who appears to be building an army of Doombot Sentinels, which has something to do with Franklin.

Was it any good?

On the one hand, this mini-series is an unnecessary cash grab that muddles the continuity of the X-books as it's unclear where this fits in the timeline. On the other hand, it's paced really well, moving faster than most of the other X-titles with the possible exception of Excalibur, and if there's one thing I like, it's a nice, dense comic book. Also, Doombot Sentinels. So I think I can chalk this book up in the win column for X-Men fans in general.

Next: New Mutants!

A prophecy once said that in the comic book industry's darkest days, a hero would come to lead the people through a plague of overpriced floppies, incentive variant covers, #1 issue reboots, and super-mega-crossover events. Sadly, that prophecy was wrong. Oh, Jude Terror was right. For ten years. About everything. But nobody listened.
