Advance Review: Thor #1 by Jason Aaron, Mike Del Mundo, Marco D'Alfonso, and Christian Ward – Beauty in the Eye of This Beholder

Tomorrow sees the release of the new Thor comic book series, still by Jason Aaron, now by Mike Del Mundo, Marco D'Alfonso, and Christian Ward, with an extra-sized launch issue, landing in comic book stores tomorrow with the weight of Mjolnir.

And, for Thor, it's a run around his world, his universe and his timeline. Returning to the mantle of Thor, he is still without his Mjolnir of old, and has to make do with a series of clearly inferior hammers.

So it's a series of trips to what remains of Asgard, the new godly home in Brooklyn, across the nine realms and to a far-flung future, with friends, family, hellhounds, and enemies along the way. There are missions, there are quests, there is derring-do and plenty of sharks to jump both now…

And later. Note, even millennia hence, Thor still sports his metal arm. But has somehow been reunited with an old friend.

And so, in beautifully rendered painted panels, Thor is further defined by all those he meets. Those from his past, present and future. Including the last to wield Mjolnir — who now has a little of the Gollum about her.

Her precious… but still part of Thor's world. And has an impact that will last the centuries. If you needed an introduction to the comic-book Thor, then this gives you one, to all of him, with images the movies would never manage to capture, this world shins out from the printed page, drip, drip, dripping into your imagination. This is Frazetta, this is Moebius, this is Del Mundo and Ward, right here, right now. And showing us all of Thor family, his father, his mother his…

Yeah. And it doesn't forget the greatest lesson that the last Thor movie gave us, that Thor can be really funny. And maybe should be. Unlike the movie it's not as much at the expense of Thor, but in the incongruity of his world and that of Midgard together.

It also has learned from other, newer creators. Jason Aaron does a grand impression of Donny Cates with his final scene. You liked the future version of Frank Castle as the Cosmic Ghost Rider? Jason Aaron asked everyone to hold his mead. And Christian Ward obliged…

…but no, we won't spoil that here. However, if you wanted to get in on the ground floor of another Thanos #13 then Thor #1 might do you proud. And Asgardians dammit, it's a really beautiful comic book.
